Two dates decide this phone

Before the specs, the calendar. Two events in September 2026 will lock in most of what the S27 Ultra becomes.

The first is Samsung's own camera verdict. According to tipster @phonefuturist (August 31), Samsung is testing five different S27 Ultra prototypes and had until roughly September 9 to pick a direction for the zoom camera: a new 4x telephoto with a larger sensor, or the current 5x periscope. Insiders describe it as a straight cost-versus-benefit call — and one reply to the original leak claims Samsung is watching Apple's September event before it decides.

The second is Qualcomm's. The company has confirmed its Snapdragon Summit for September 22–24 in Maui, and it is openly teasing "Dual 8 Elites" — two flagship chips, both rumored to be built on TSMC's 2nm process. The S27 Ultra is expected to carry the faster of the two, worldwide.

Everything else — launch, pricing, availability — should follow the usual pattern: an announcement around February 2027.

The battery wall finally breaks

Start with the number that made this phone interesting. GalaxyClub, one of the most reliable Samsung-focused outlets, reports a rated cell of 5,534mAh — which Samsung would market as roughly 5,700mAh, possibly 5,800. That is about 15% more capacity than the S26 Ultra, and the first real increase since the Ultra line began.

The trick is the chemistry. The S27 Ultra is widely expected to use a silicon-carbon cell — the same technology Samsung already ships in the Galaxy Z Fold 8. In plain terms: silicon-carbon packs more energy into the same physical space without adding weight or thickness. Chinese brands have used it to pass 6,000mAh in phones slimmer than this one. Samsung has simply been late.

What does 15% buy you in the hand? Roughly, the difference between plugging in at dinner and not. Combined with a more efficient chip, the leaks point to the first Ultra in years that comfortably clears a heavy day.

Charging is less exciting. The S27 and S27+ just passed through China's 3C regulator at 25W and 45W respectively, and the Ultra is expected to keep its 60W wired speed. Wireless stays at 25W — unless the magnet rumors are true (more on those below).

A 2nm chip, and what it actually buys you

Every S27 Ultra leak agrees on the brain: a custom "for Galaxy" version of Qualcomm's next flagship. Leakier is the name. SamMobile reported on August 21 that Qualcomm is preparing two chips — the SM8950 (Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6) and a faster SM8975 (Snapdragon 8 Elite "Extreme" Gen 6) — and that the S27 Pro and Ultra get the faster one globally.

The number that matters is not the marketing name. It is the node: 2nm, down from 3nm. Smaller transistors do the same work while drawing less power and throwing off less heat — which in a phone means longer battery life and fewer hot, throttled gaming sessions. A leaked 5GHz peak clock for the new Oryon cores is floating around; treat that as unverified until Qualcomm's keynote on September 22.

Two more pieces may complete the package. Samsung showed its first UFS 5.0 storage module in June 2026, and the S27 line is the obvious debut — roughly double the storage speed of the UFS 4.1 in current phones. On RAM, sources split: some say LPDDR6, others LPDDR5X. That fight is not settled, and with memory prices climbing industry-wide, Samsung may make the cheaper call.

Three cameras, one big open question

The S27 Ultra will not look like any Ultra before it. Case renders shared by Ice Universe on September 2 show a full-width raised camera bar — a "plateau," in the current jargon — with two large lenses on the left and a vertical pill on the right holding a third lens, a time-of-flight sensor, and the flash. Yes, it resembles the iPhone 17 Pro. Everyone in this industry borrows from everyone.

Under the bar, the bigger news: the quad camera is probably dead. Korean outlet ETNews reported in early August that Samsung will drop the 3x telephoto to cut costs, leaving three rear cameras — the 200MP main, a 50MP ultrawide, and one telephoto. The reason is prosaic: a memory-price crisis the press has nicknamed "RAMageddon" is squeezing every manufacturer's bill of materials, and a camera module is an expensive line item to remove.

Which telephoto survives is the September 9 question. The leading leak: a new 50MP, 1/1.9-inch sensor with 4x optical zoom — noticeably larger than the current 5x periscope's 1/2.52-inch chip, meaning sharper zoom shots in low light and easier portrait framing. Magnetic charging — believe it when you see it

This is the leak the internet fell in love with. CAD-based leaks published August 25 describe a magnetic ring built into the S27 Ultra's chassis — native Qi2 support, meaning magnetic chargers, wallets, and car mounts that snap on without a case, exactly like MagSafe on iPhones. It would also explain the camera plateau: that big bar has to exist for a reason, and a magnet ring needs internal space.

But hold your wallet. That same week, 9to5Google's reporting urged caution — and CAD leaks describe prototypes, five of which are currently in testing. Both leaks can honestly be true: Samsung builds the magnet ring, tests it, and ships the phone without it. File this one under "genuinely undecided," and do not buy any accessory until the phone is official.

How leak numbers inflate — and how to spot it

Somewhere right now, a blog is telling readers the S27 Ultra will ship a 12,000mAh battery. Some claim 20,000. Neither is happening. But the path from a real number to those headlines is worth understanding, because it plays out for every spec on every phone:

A Korean report says the rated cell is 5,534mAh. A tipster rounds up to "over 6,000." A third, quoting the second, writes 6,500. An aggregator translates all three, calls it a range, and a forum turns the range into "Samsung is testing 20,000mAh." Nobody lied at any single step. That is the trick of it.

The same filter kills two other rumors making the rounds: the 144Hz display (one outlet, no corroboration — expect 120Hz) and fan-wiki fantasies like removable graphene batteries. When a number excites you, look for who reported it first, and whether they showed their work. That rule will serve you long after this phone is old news.

Meet the S27 Pro, the new sibling

The S27 Ultra is not launching alone. Filings and renders agree on a four-phone lineup: S27, S27+, S27 Pro, and S27 Ultra — the first time Samsung adds a tier instead of renaming one.

The Pro, based on Ice Universe's renders from August 27, is a compact Ultra in spirit: the same camera plateau design, a 6.47-inch display with the Privacy Screen feature, the shared 200MP main camera, and a 5,200mAh battery. What you give up: the S Pen (no slot) and, in all likelihood, the 5x zoom, which leaks suggest stays Ultra-only. The base S27 and S27+ keep the old design almost unchanged — OnLeaks renders show a phone nearly identical to the S26.

So — wait, or buy?

Three honest answers, depending on who you are.

If you own an S26 Ultra: wait. Your phone already has this generation's design language, and the real upgrades here — battery and efficiency — are exactly the ones worth a year's patience.

If you own an S25 Ultra or older: wait, seriously. Battery, chip node, camera architecture, and design all change in the same generation. That has not happened on an Ultra since 2020.

If your phone is dying today: buy the S26 Ultra when the winter discounts hit, a few weeks before the S27 announcement. Paying full flagship price in September for a phone that gets discounted in February is the one genuinely bad move on the board.
